I have read Bamboo Heart & Bamboo Island and found they helped me to understand the attitude towards the Japanese of my late father. He was part of the British expeditionary force who travelled up through Burma and saw the results of some of the atrocities carried out by Japanese Troops but never expanded on what he had seen. His adverse reaction to my husband & my friendship with some Japanese was, to us, a bit difficult to understand as they & we were all born at the end of the war and were not part of military activity but in his opinion “leopards don’t change their spots’. I am looking forward to reading the last book in the Trilogy Bamboo Road and thank you for writing such interesting books. Best wishes Jan Meyrick

Hi Jan, Thanks so much for contacting me and letting me know what you thought of the books. And thank you for reading them too! It’s interesting too to hear about your father’s wartime experience, but sad about his reaction to your husband. The final book in the trilogy is a bit different – about the wartime experience of a young Thai woman, a member of the Thai underground. I wanted to look at it from a different angle, and don’t think that has been done before. By the way, I had an interview on radio Surrey and Sussex last week in which I talk a bit about my father’s experience and about my research.
